Beautifully Clad Pillars

I must admit, Im a sucker for using any kind of natural rock in a landscape, or anywhere for that matter. I think its because stone seems to add a certain amount of maturity to its surroundings.
These pillars were the first things to go up on this site that Ive been driving past over the last few days. Everything about these pillars appeal to me. From the proportions, to the colours - the browns and oranges and reds of the slate look amazing, and contrast nicely with the white concrete capstone.

To me, its a good sign that the rest of the development is going to be just as beautiful?
Thomas Rainer to Speak at LAHR Symposium

This years theme for the symposium is described as "Inspiring New Directions." Here is the official blurb:
The 26th annual Lahr Symposium explores the work of landscape architects, authors, and gardeners who were inspired by native plants to change their career paths to pursue unique callings. From journalist turned naturalist to researcher turned native fruit aficionado, these individuals explain how native plants have influenced their work. Learn how native plants can foster creativity in the garden and inspire new insights into nature and landscape design.
For complete program details, including a map and directions, see the Lahr Symposium brochure . Registration fee includes lunch and early access to the Native Plant Sale. Fee: $89 ($71 FONA) Registration required.
Note: This year the symposium will be held at the Beltsville Area Research Center at 10300 Baltimore Blvd, Beltsville, MD.
Front Garden Design How to Make Your Front Yard Look Amazing!

Learning a few tricks of the trade will enable your Front yard to be streets ahead of your whole neighborhood. Its not as hard as you think to create a great looking Front Garden.
The real key to having a stunning Front yard is to first and foremost, make it look like a Garden. Even if it needs to be functional with a drive and access to a garage or path to your Front door, these should be secondary to your Front yard being a beautiful Garden.
How to Plan Your Front Yard
The way to achieve this is to think about how you would want your Garden to look if it didnt need to be functional. So, if you have a drive or a path to consider, just imagine how you would landscape your yard if those werent needed. By taking away the functional, practical aspect and just allowing yourself to be creative, you will come up with a much better Design than if you concentrated on the functional first.
Once you have in your mind your ideal Garden, see how you can get it to look like that but with the incorporation your drive and your path etc. Youll find tackling it this way round will make a tremendous difference to how it looks.
Choose Your Shape Carefully
Try using shapes that will make the most use of the space you have available. Curves and circles, for example, are very good at making areas look bigger, as well as softening the lines of the house.
Getting the shape right in the Design process, before you even consider putting any plants or features in, will ensure you a greater degree of success than if you just concentrate on plants alone. Plants obviously are very important to any Garden but unless the shape is right to begin with, they will never really do it justice.
Another key thing to think about is which is your most important viewpoint? Do you want the Garden to look the best as you approach the house from the road, or do you want your view out of the window to look the best? Once you know the answer to that question, this will then help you guide your Design in the best way.
Its important to put your ideas down on paper before you start to build anything. Its much easier to change things on paper than it is on the ground, and considerably less expensive!

Custom Landscape Design with Fire Water
Warming Trends has recently completed a custom residential landscape design project involving an outdoor fire pit and waterfall feature. This project was designed by the owner of the company and executed by his crew. Below is the video of the most recent landscape design project completed by Warming Trends.
If you would like to see some of the project in the works and how landscape design works from the ground up, literally, then check out our portfolio of this project here.

Thomas D Church Landscape Architect

Heres a personal favourite of mine... Thomas D. Church
Back in university I was asked to do a design project that modeled after a well-known Landscape Architects design style. Thomas Church was the one I chose for the project and I can tell you at that point I had no idea who he was... but for some reason I had picked his name to study.
(Photo Example: Churchs influence in my design, as you walk up the stairs, your view of the garden changes many times before getting to the door.)Since that moment, a whole world of design perspective opened up to me once I researched him. Thomas Church has continued to be one of the most influential designers for all my work. Church pioneered the use of gardens for people to interact in and not just something to view from inside the house. His design ideas took the homeowner outside the home and into the yard where they felt as if they were moving from one room to the next. The outdoors became an extension of a persons home... another spot to live in.
It is said that Thomas Church caused a whole society to change its views of how the landscape worked. He gave full meaning to the term Landscape Architecture as he pushed to combine the Architecture of the home with the landscape. Today there is a huge push to design outdoor kitchens and eating areas... patios and decks that act like living rooms to entertain in... pool areas to lounge around in and enjoy the gardens nearby.
Thomas Church strongly believed that the gardens were for people that used them and as a designer, listening to what your client wanted was the most important thing a designer could do! When the designer stops listening and starts to push their own ideas for the use of a space, the design will ultimately fail...
Most of his design photos and theories can be found in a wonderful book he wrote "Gardens Are for People".
